Overview
When someone you love is struggling with substance use, it’s easy to get caught in a cycle of over-responsibility – feeling like it’s your job to fix, prevent, or control what happens next. This can leave you overwhelmed, resentful, and unsure of where your influence actually begins and ends.
This workshop will help you step back and explore how to set boundaries rooted in self-respect and emotional safety, rather than control or fear. You’ll gain insight into how to protect your energy, express your needs, and respond in ways that support both you and your child – without fueling power struggles or sacrificing connection.
You’ll leave with a grounded understanding of how to create and maintain boundaries that reflect your values, along with a clearer perspective on what’s truly within your control – and become clear on what’s not.
this course will help you:
- Distinguish the difference between healthy boundaries and ultimatums
- Recognize the limits of your influence and let go of what you can’t control
- Communicate boundaries clearly and calmly, without blame or threats
- Set limits that protect your peace without cutting off connection
- Navigate fear, guilt, and self-doubt around boundary-setting
- Practice self-care while creating a more stable, respectful environment at home
Who is the course for?

about your facilitator
Dina Cannizzaro:
My name is Dina Cannizzaro. I’m the mother of three adult children, ages 35, 29, and 26. My middle son, Parker, is in recovery from a harrowing nine years of using drugs and has been in active recovery from IV heroin use for seven years.
I was a high school teacher, counselor, admissions director, and Vice Principal for 36 years and recently retired to pursue my passion for helping parents whose kids struggle with substance misuse. My goal is to “get the word out” about drug addiction being an equal opportunity destroyer that can happen to any family.
I hope to help parents create boundaries they can live with while maintaining a healthy and loving dialogue with their children – no matter their age or the drugs they use. I believe each story is different and may require a unique approach. I also believe each parent handles their child’s Substance Use Disorder in their way, and in their own time.
Most of us need tools we learn along the way that can help us live through the chapters of life with a child who suffers from SUD. If we can help each other and share learned knowledge, we will all be better for it. I can’t wait to share with you and learn from you.
